SMERZ MAX

Norwegian electronic music duo based in Copenhagen, Smerz, have released a unique new album, Believer. This album still uses elements of pop and avant-garde electronics that are at the centre of their earlier releases. However, this album has unmistakable classical influences, creating a fresh and unparalleled sound. The second track of the album 'Max' particularly caught our ears. Blurring the lines of classical and electronic, the song begins with strings and synths. R&B inflected, and almost whispered, the vocals are reminiscent of London artist Tirzah. Climactic and thick synth/string parts break up the song for moments of dramatic sound. In Henri and Catta's words, "This album is a result of conversations between the two of us and our friendship. Musically we have let every aspect of music and sound that we enjoy be part of it." Believer is available now on XL Recordings. -Ellie Rose-Davies
